South Korea has begun its final countdown to this year’s World Cup finals by beating nine-man Costa Rica 1-0 in an international friendly in Los Angeles.
South Korea’s Kim Shin-Wook was the hero for the Asian nation, scoring the only goal of the game within 10 minutes of the opening whistle.
However, the game was marred by two Costa Rica players being sent-off with Christopher Meneses shown a straight red in the 68th minute while Mauricio Castillo picked up two cautions in the space of 10 minutes deep into the second half.
This was the third straight defeat for the Central American nation following on from losses to Chile and Australia.
However, South Korea, fielding an experimental side made up of Asian based players, can take a positive result into its next two matches against Mexico and the United States.
South Korea faces Belgium, Algeria and Russia at the World Cup while Costa Rica play Uruguay, England and Italy.
