Yorkshire granted international membership by CONIFA

Yorkshire arrival on the international scene comes too late for CONIFA's 2018 World Cup in London.

Yorkshire can boast the world's newest international football team after its membership of the non-FIFA Confederation of International Football Associations (CONIFA) was ratified on Saturday.

The team, for which only players born in the county are eligible, was set up in July and are set to make their debut with a friendly match against Isle of Man at Hemsworth on Jan. 28.

Growing number of football fans would back gay national players - poll

The poll showed changing attitudes among fans towards gay players.

Four in five British football fans would have no problem if an international player from one of the home nations came out as gay or bisexual, a poll has shown.

The poll, conducted by fan opinion platform Forza Football and LGBT campaign group Stonewall, asked 50,000 supporters in 38 countries about their attitudes to inclusivity and anti-gay abuse.

Ideguchi goal in 94th minute helps Japan edge North Korea in Tokyo

The ESPN FC crew feel Group H is the most unpredictable with Poland, Senegal, Colombia and Japan making up the group.

Japan had a late strike from Yosuke Ideguchi to thank for earning a fortuitous 1-0 win over North Korea on Saturday to put Vahid Halilhodzic's side on top of the early standings at the East Asian Championships.

Ideguchi's deflected effort in the 94th minute in front of just over 20,000 fans at Ajinomoto Stadium secured all three points for Japan. They move to the top of the standings after South Korea and China played out a 2-2 draw earlier in the evening.

The North Koreans were unfortunate not...

China coach Marcello Lippi names Yu Dabao captain for East Asian games

Melbourne Victory team manager Paul Trimboli talks about the 2018 AFC Champions League draw.

Former Benfica winger Yu Dabao has been named captain by China coach Marcello Lippi for the East Asian Championship in Japan in the absence of veteran midfielder Zheng Zhi.

Zheng, who is closing in on his 100th cap for China, was ruled out of the tournament due to a lingering injury at the end of the Chinese Super League season. That opened the way for Lippi to name Yu as captain for the four-team tournament.

"Considering that this competition is a post-season one and our core players are on holiday,...

Roberto Carlos: Wind brought my famous free kick back on target

Roberto Carlos
Roberto Carlos (centre) hit his legendary free kick a little over 20 years ago.

Roberto Carlos has told L'Equipe that his extraordinary free kick against France a little over two decades ago would never have happened had it not been for the wind.

The former Brazil full-back, 44, sent a swerving thunderbolt past Fabien Barthez from more than 35 metres during a 1-1 draw in the friendly Le Tournoi in June 1997.

His sensational strike at Lyon's Stade de Gerland saw his name make headlines around the world but he said that, without the wind, it would never have happened.

"If I had...
