David Seaman: Joe Hart still best English goalkeeper, criticism unfair

Former England goalkeeper David Seaman has told L'Equipe that criticism of Joe Hart is "unfair."

Hart, waiting to find a new club after has loan spell at Torino ended, was beaten twice by free kicks as England drew 2-2 in Scotland on Saturday.

Seaman said he believed Hart, who is out of favour at Manchester City, "deserves" to kickstart his career at "a good Premier League club."

The goalkeeper's uncertain future did not prevent England manager Gareth Southgate from picking him for Saturday's World Cup qualifier, in which he was beaten by two late Leigh Griffiths strikes.

But former Arsenal and England goalkeeper Seaman, 53, told L'Equipe: "The criticism is unfair, because the free kicks were perfectly taken.

"For the first the wall didn't jump, which didn't make Joe's job easier. For the second, he really couldn't do anything.

"For me, Joe is still the best English goalkeeper by far."

He said he had watched Hart in action for Torino last season and praised him for "some fantastic saves," adding: "I hope he'll be able to bounce back very quickly with a good Premier League club -- he deserves it."

Hart is not expected to play in Tuesday's friendly with France in Paris, with Southgate scheduled to give Tom Heaton and Jack Butland a half each at the Stade de France.
