Belgium captaincy may be shared around - manager Roberto Martinez

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Chelsea star Eden Hazard will captain the team against Spain but suggested the armband could be shared around in future.

With regular captain Vincent Kompany out with a groin problem, Hazard, 25, led his country at Euro 2016 as their campaign ended with defeat to Wales.

While Hazard will again captain the team against Spain, Martinez is looking to senior figures such as Thibaut Courtois, Jan Vertonghen and Thomas Vermaelen in future games.

"Hazard will wear the armband against Spain, but we have several leaders, such as Courtois, Vermaelen and Vertonghen. Leadership must be shared," Martinez, who succeeded Marc Wilmots after the Euros, said at a news conference.

"Eden will wear the armband for this game, but we'll see after that."

Following their surprise quarterfinal exit to Wales, Belgium are hoping Martinez can bring the best out of the squad as they embark on their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The coach has been reunited with striker Romelu Lukaku, who flourished under his management at Everton last season when he scored 25 goals in all competitions.

Lukaku has 17 goals from 51 appearances for his country, and Martinez said: "The idea is to get the best from all the players.

"Knowing Romelu like I know him, I know how he reacts in big games. That will allow me to use him in the right way."
