Danny Rose set for England debut as Ryan Bertrand withdraws from squad

Tottenham Hotspur's Danny Rose is set to make his England debut against Germany on Saturday after Ryan Bertrand returned to Southampton for treatment after picking up a calf complaint.

England decided against calling-up a replacement for Bertrand, leaving Rose as the only recognised left-back for the friendly with the world champions in Berlin, although another player could join the squad before Tuesday's match against the Netherlands at Wembley.

Rose was included in the squad for the matches against Norway and Switzerland in August 2015 but was an unused substitute in both games and was then forced to withdraw from the group to face Lithuania and Italy in March last year through injury.

The 25-year-old qualifies for Jamaica through a grandparent and he considered playing for the Caribbean nation in last summer's Copa America in Chile after admitting he felt "nowhere near" Roy Hodgson's England squad.

However, Rose's consistent form for title-chasing Spurs this season has caught Hodgson's eye and he is set to become the 76th Tottenham player to represent England -- three more than any other club -- on Saturday.

"I've been really pleased with Danny," Hodgson said last week when announcing his squad for the friendlies.

"He's been with us before: for the first squad after the World Cup, for the games against Norway and Switzerland, and [he] has been in squads since then as well. He's not unknown to us, but his career at Tottenham, last season and the beginning of this, was a bit in and out.

"Since then he's been given his chance and, this season, he's seized that opportunity. He's played so well that he deserves a chance to show what he can do. I'll have a chance to give him a start in a game against a top-quality opponent, and it'll be up to him to show what he can do.
