Bastian Schweinsteiger suffers partial medial collateral ligament tear

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger suffered a partial tear to the medial collateral ligament in his knee in Germany training on Tuesday, the German FA (DFB) has confirmed.

Schweinsteiger, who only returned to action this month following another knee injury in January, sustained the problem after joining up with his international teammates this week.

The injury was confirmed after he underwent an MRI scan in Munich on Wednesday, and the DFB said the Germany captain will play no part in the friendlies with England on Saturday and Italy on Tuesday.

The DFB statement read: "The 31-year-old captain suffered a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee following a challenge at the end of training on Tuesday afternoon. The diagnosis was confirmed following an MRI scan at the practice of team doctor Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt in Munich earlier today.

"He will receive further treatment at his club Manchester United in consultation with the medical department of the national team."

No further information was given on the expected length of his absence but the 31-year-old is likely to miss a significant part of the run-in and his participation in Euro 2016, which begins on June 10, could be in doubt.

The DFB had earlier announced that Mesut Ozil missed Wednesday's training session, with the Arsenal midfielder having suffered a knock to his left ankle in Saturday's Premier League match at Everton.

Bayer Leverkusen's Karim Bellarabi sat out the session with a bruised foot.
