France manager Didier Deschamps thanks England for support

France manager Didier Deschamps thanked English football for its show of support at Wembley on Tuesday to his team and country after last week's Paris terror attacks.

"I would like to thank everyone for the statement and actions of solidarity," said Decshamps after England's 2-0 victory over his team. "We felt very grateful to the people not just at Wembley, but the whole English nation who have supported us. We've had an outpouring of almost communal grief and it's been good for us."

Deschamps described his feelings during the prematch remembrance ceremony, where fans from both countries sang the French national anthem and players joined together for a minute's silence.

"I felt very, very strong emotions, powerful emotions," said Deschamps, whose team's friendly on Friday with Germany at the Stade De France was subjected to suicide bomb attacks, leading to the death of three people. "When we all sang together, it was a special and powerful moment. People show emotions differently.

"Some people keep it to themselves, others are more outgoing, but you could sense it was a moment when people came together. It was heart-moving, you could feel it deep down in your gut. It was a special and grandiose moment."

Deschamps admitted his awareness of events in Germany on Tuesday, where the national team's friendly with Netherlands in Hannover was called off in prematch after a terror alert, but said he had chosen not to tell his players.

"I found out about it during the warm-up on the edge of the pitch while I was talking with my staff but didn't think there was any need to transmit that to my players," he said. "The atmosphere was heavy enough, we had suffered enough on Friday. I didn't feel any need to mention it to the players before the match."

Midfielder Lassana Diarra, who lost his cousin in Friday's attacks, came on as a second-half substitute.

"I had spoken at some length with Lassana," Deschamps said of the Marseille midfielder.

"He said all along he would be ready to come on. I really respected his choice and how he has carried himself through all this. For that alone, I made the decision that he was going to feature."
