Germany's Manuel Neuer ruled out of Australia friendly

Germany will be without goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for Wednesday's friendly against Australia, coach Joachim Low has said.

The Bayern Munich star will miss the game with a knee problem but is expected to be available for Sunday's European Championship qualifier in Georgia.

"We just don't want to take any risks," Low told a news conference ahead of the friendly in Kaiserslautern.

Borussia Dortmund's Roman Weidenfeller and Hannover's Ron-Robert Zieler are the alternative options in the Germany squad, but Low said: "We have not talked about who will be in goal."

The Germany boss confirmed that Bayern centre-back Holger Badstuber and Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan would both play after returning to fitness.

He will rest some of his key stars to ensure they will be fully fit for the Georgia clash, with Germany desperately seeking a win after losing 2-0 to Poland and drawing 1-1 with Ireland in October.

Low said he was looking forward to facing Ange Postecoglou's Australia, who won the Asian Cup in January.

"Asian champions vs. world champions -- that's an interesting fixture," he said.

"It's a very good preparation for the upcoming games. We rate their outstanding mentality highly. They never give up. They are bit like [Germany's Group D rivals] Ireland or Scotland."

Low also praised Australia's progress under Postecoglou, saying: "A few years ago, they played long balls and tried to win the second balls. Very British.

"But with the new coach, they try to set up plays from the back, have good, quick counters, and in some situations even attack their opponents very high up the pitch."

Germany will wear black armbands and observe a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the Germanwings plane crash on Tuesday, in which 150 people died.

"It's had an impact on everyone and it overshadows everything," German FA president Wolfgang Niersbach said. "As a football family, we owe it to the victims and their families to pay our respects."
