International friendlies: Luis Suarez's Uruguay held; Costa Rica thriller

Luis Suarez made his first appearance since being given a four-month ban by FIFA for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup, but his Uruguay side were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia.

The Barcelona striker is only banned for 'official matches only' after an appeal was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport and took the chance to play in the friendly at the King Fahd stadium. Although he was substituted for Abel Hernandez with 20 minutes remaining by manager Oscar Tabarez.

Suarez's volley had given Uruguay the lead in a roundabout way as it crashed off the post and forced an own goal from Muath Fallatah just after half-time.

However, with no spark to fire them to victory, Uruguay were hit by a late blow as a glancing header from Naif Hazazi levelled the scores with only minutes remaining.

An own goal by Nyron Nosworthy allowed Japan to beat Jamaica 1-0 in a friendly on Friday and give Javier Aguirre his first win as coach.

Jamaica were guilty of poor defending from the outset, and Nosworthy deflected the ball into his own net in the 16th minute before a crowd of 39,628 at Big Swan Stadium.

Keisuke Honda came close to making it 2-0, but his shot hit the crossbar in the 33rd minute.

Shinji Kagawa, in his first appearance for Aguirre, played deeper in midfield than usual, and played on with a suspected concussion until the 90th minute. He will now not travel to Singapore for the friendly with Brazil.

"I feel calm, relaxed as always. We created five or six more chances to score, which was pleasing," said Aguirre.

First-half goals from Kim Min-woo and Nam Tae-hee gave Uli Stielike a comfortable 2-0 win in his first game in charge of South Korea against Paraguay in Cheonan.

Kim and Nam managed their first international goals within four minutes of each other, boosting South Korea in its preparations for the Asian Cup in January. Cho Young-cheol had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside, and the hosts missed gilt-edged opportunities throughout the match.

Stielike was appointed last month, and the former West Germany and Real Madrid midfielder will have been delighted with a slick and aggressive attacking performance from a Korean side who are rebounding from a disappointing World Cup.

World Cup surprise side Costa Rica edged a thriller with Oman 4-3 as they went 4-1 up with 50 minutes gone thanks to goals from Alvaro Saborio, John Jairo Ruiz, Juan Bustos and David Ramirez.

However, Paul Le Guen's side hit back with Saleh Raed, Mohammed al-Seyabi and Emad al-Hosani on target but they could not complete their comeback.

China cruised to a 3-0 friendly win over Thailand at the Wuhan Sports Centre Stadium.

After a goalless first half, China were gifted the lead by a howler from goalkeeper Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool who seemed to be put off by Wu Xi and ended up putting the ball into his own net.

In the 84th minute, Sun Ke smashed home and header from Liao Lisheng and Yang Xu made it 3-0 to give Alain Perrin's men a comfortable win.

Australia were held 0-0 by fellow Asian Cup finalists United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi as Alex Wilkinson cleared an attempt off the line and Trent Sainsbury missed the best chance of the game in the second half.

Uzbekistan and visiting Bahrain played out a goalless draw in Pakhtahor.
