Martin O'Neill expected to get Ireland job

Martin O'Neill is set to be confirmed as the next Republic of Ireland manager with an announcement due early next week, sources have told ESPN.

Maher: Inconsistent Ireland

Bookies have suspended the market on the next Ireland manager after a flood of bets on O'Neill on Thursday, with Football Association of Ireland chiefs eager to confirm his appointment as soon as possible.

O'Neill is reported to have held talks with Crystal Palace over their managerial vacancy earlier this week as he seeks a first job since leaving Sunderland in March, but it is the lure of international football which looks set to tempt him to make a return to the game.

Former captain Mick McCarthy was believed to be a contender to make a return as Ireland boss, but it seems as if the FAI's long-standing first-choice candidate has now agreed to succeed Giovanni Trapattoni.

Noel King has been Ireland's interim manager for their last two games, a 3-0 defeat in Germany and a 3-1 home win over Kazakhstan.

The appointment of O'Neill would come as a huge boost to the FAI -- still reeling from the disastrous Euro 2012 campaign and subsequent failure to reach next year's World Cup finals in Brazil -- as they look to drum up interest in the upcoming friendly international against Latvia at the Aviva Stadium on Nov. 15.
