Nicolas Anelka named ISL side Mumbai City's player-manager

Former Chelsea and Liverpool striker Nicolas Anelka has been named player-manager of Indian Super League club Mumbai City.

Anelka, 36, was announced as the club's marquee signing for a second successive season last month, and is now to be given managerial responsibilities for the season, which runs from October to December.

Last year, Anelka played seven games for Mumbai, scoring twice.

The former France international, who last played in Europe with West Bromwich Albion in 2014, was named sporting director of Algerian club Hussein Dey earlier this year, and was briefly co-coach of Shanghai Shenhua during his spell in China in 2012.

Italy's 2006 World Cup-winner Marco Materazzi and former England goalkeeper David James have both held player-manager roles in the ISL, with Chennaiyin FC and Kerela Blasters respectively.
