KOLKATA -- Amid fresh speculation that they have found new sponsors, a senior East Bengal official on Thursday said the club's "dream" was to play in the Indian Super League (ISL).

"If Mohun Bagan can play in the ISL, we can also do that," Debabrata Sarkar told PTI. "We are trying our best for that and are in talks with potential investors. But we have not yet reached a stage for announcement.

"At a time when people of the country are dying and starving [because of the COVID-19 pandemic], nobody is thinking about all this now. Let us overcome this phase, then we will talk about it. But definitely the club's target is ISL."

The I-League season was called off, and Mohun Bagan declared winners, on Tuesday. East Bengal finished second. Mohun Bagan will merge with ATK in June and the two clubs will compete as one team in the next ISL season.
