What is the I-League-AIFF showdown all about?

What is the story?

The I-League clubs want a 20-team unified professional league starting with 2019-20 season. They have written to the AIFF pitching the same, but are yet to get an official response.

Nine I-League clubs have also written to AIFF general secretary Kushal Das, communicating their keenness to participate in the ongoing Super Cup, subject to a meeting with federation president Praful Patel about the future of the I-League.

'Everyone in Indian football is losing money hand over fist' - BFC chief

Bangalore FC CEO Parth Jindal suggests that the ISL and I League join hands for the betterment of football in India
Bengaluru FC CEO Parth Jindal speaks about the state of affairs in Indian football.

Bengaluru FC CEO Parth Jindal has called for a unified league, with promotion and relegation, while stressing on the need for "financial sacrifices" by all stakeholders in Indian football -- the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) marketing and commercial partners IMG-Reliance (IMG-R), the franchise-based Indian Super League (ISL) clubs, and the clubs playing in the I-League.

Seven I-League clubs withdraw from Super Cup

Seven clubs, including Minerva Punjab, have withdrawn from the upcoming Super Cup set to take place in Bhubaneswar this month. While the other six teams - Mohun Bagan, Chennai City FC, East Bengal, Aizawl FC, Gokulam Kerala and NEROCA - remained tight-lipped, Minerva cited the "unfair treatment" meted out by the AIFF to all I-League clubs as the reason for their decision. AIFF general secretary Kushal Das confirmed to ESPN that he had received the withdrawal letter from the seven clubs, but did...

Chennai City - champions of adversity, champions of India

Before the start of the 2018-19 I-League season, Chennai City's new striker Pedro Manzi had only thing in mind: "I want to help the team win the league this year."

Manzi did just that, guiding Chennai City to become the first team from Tamil Nadu to win the I-League title, in only their third year in the top division.

He scored 21 goals to finish as the league's top-scorer, joining the likes of Ranti Martins and Odafa Okolie in Indian footballing folklore.  He was on target even on Saturday,...

No title, but a season to remember for East Bengal

Inside 11 seconds of the restart of their last match of 2018, East Bengal's hopes of winning the I-League almost went up in flames in front of their own fans, at the Salt Lake Stadium.

Debutants Real Kashmir, having defended doggedly for 45 minutes, saw midfielder Surchandra Singh zip in a low cross after bombing down the right. East Bengal right-back Lalramchullova tracked back swiftly but the pace of the cross skewed his clearance into the roof of his own net.

Kashmir, perhaps the stingiest defence...
