Portuguese Matos likely to become India Under-17 coach

Former Portugal striker Luis Norton Matos is understood to be one of two candidates being considered to take over as the head coach of the Indian Under-17 team, with less than eight months to go before India hosts the FIFA U-17 World Cup in October.

German coach Nicolai Adam, who had been entrusted in 2015 with preparing the team for the event, resigned at the end of January, following reports of physical abuse by him in the course of the Granatkin Memorial Cup in Russia earlier this year.

Matos, capped as a forward by the Portugal national team and a player who plied his trade in clubs in Portugal and Belgium, has been associated with teams like Vitoria Guimaraes and Benfica B as coach.

He also served as director of football at Sporting Clube de Portugal. The only international team Matos has coaching experience with is Guinea-Bissau, where he was at the helm between 2010 and 2012.

The U-17 team is presently training in Goa under national team coach Stephen Constantine and his support staff. Constantine, assistant coach Shanmugham Venkatesh and goalkeeping coach Rogerio Ramos are slated to be with the team till Saturday, February 25.
