I-League by the numbers: Mohun Bagan draw a rare blank

In the course of their 0-0 draw with DSK Shivajians, Mohun Bagan failed to score at least one goal for the first time in 15 I-League games, a streak dating back to February 10, 2016, when Mumbai FC held them to a goalless draw. The draw also snapped a sequence of five successive wins in the I-League. Fittingly perhaps, their last drawn match was also against Shivajians, a 3-3 result in Barasat that eventually played a significant role in denying them a successful title defence.

Bengaluru FC lost successive matches in the I-League for the first time in almost two years. In the 2014-15 season, they were beaten 3-1 at home by Pune FC on January 24 and then lost 1-0 to East Bengal four days later. This time, East Bengal began that trend by beating them 2-1 on January 22, while Churchill Brothers beat them by the same score on January 27.

A Chennai-based club won an NFL/I-League match by a margin of two goals or more after 14 years. The last team to achieve this feat was Indian Bank, who beat Indian Telephone Industries, Bangalore 6-1 on March 10, 2003 when they faced off in Chennai, with Sri Lankan striker Kasun Jayasuriya scoring a hat-trick. In November 2002 earlier that season, Indian Bank had also defeated Dempo 3-1 in Chennai, with Jayasuriya scoring one goal in addition to a brace from Syed Shabir Pasha.

Aser Dipanda scored his second brace in Indian football with his two goals in the course of Shillong Lajong's 3-1 win over Mumbai FC, also bringing up 10 goals for him in the I-League. The two performances were separated by 349 days. Dipanda announced his arrival in the I-League with his former club DSK Shivajians by scoring two goals against Salgoacar in Pune on February 14, 2016. Salgaocar had an answer to him in Darryl Duffy, though, as the match was won 3-2 by the Goan club.

Sunil Chhetri has now scored the most goals for Bengaluru FC as any other club in NFL/I-League history. 44 of Chhetri's 87 goals in the national league are now equally split between Bengaluru FC and JCT, after he scored from the penalty spot in the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Churchill Brothers, one of six other teams he has played for in the league, and also scored four goals for.

Wedson Anselme became the first footballer from Haiti to have scored a hat trick in NFL/I-League history with his three goals in East Bengal's 5-0 win over Minerva Punjab on January 29. Anselme's compatriot Sony Norde came close to a hat trick on three separate occasions, scoring a brace of goals each for Mohun Bagan against Bengaluru FC and Bharat FC in 2015 and DSK Shivajians last year.
