Mike Phelan expects Hull to begin contract talks with Robert Snodgrass

Mike Phelan expects Hull to start contract talks with in-form winger Robert Snodgrass soon.

The Scotland international, who has netted five times this term, revealed to local radio after Saturday's 1-1 draw with West Brom that he had received no contact from the club about extending his current deal beyond the end of the season.

But, speaking ahead of the Tigers' EFL Cup quarterfinal with Newcastle at the KCOM Stadium on Tuesday night, Phelan confirmed Hull would address the situation shortly.

"That will be taken care of in due course,'' head coach Phelan said.

"We will pay attention to that as he is an important football player. We will be dealing with that pretty shortly.''

Another player in the same situation is Harry Maguire, although he has had some contact about fresh terms.

The former Sheffield United defender, having struggled to secure regular first-team football, is expected to be given a chance to impress against Newcastle.

"There has been bits and bobs between my agent and the chairman, not too much but hopefully in the coming months it will get sorted,'' Maguire said.

"As a footballer, I want to play every week. I want to play regular football but you also want the security of the length of the contract.

"As you know, I am going into the last six months of the contract so hopefully something can be sorted.''

Phelan is expected to make a couple of changes for the last-eight clash, but refused to take the competition lightly despite the possibility of a fixture pile-up in the new year.

The Tigers, who sit in the Premier League relegation zone, are a win away from reaching the two-legged semi-finals.

Those clashes will take Hull's number of matches in January to six, potentially more depending on FA Cup progress, after playing six league games in December.

But rather than see the EFL Cup as a hindrance to their top-flight survival hopes, Phelan believes Hull should relish the opportunity to continue their progress in a competition that has already seen them beat Exeter, Stoke and Bristol City.

"We have progressed in this cup and now we get to this stage it is important we maintain momentum,'' Phelan said.

"We have found ourselves progressing well in this competition, we are in the quarter-finals and we know if we get through this one there are two more games to be added to your calendar, when they come in January, after a busy Christmas.

"But all the players are looking forward to it. If you are in a cup competition and get that far, then you want to go as far as you possibly can. The team on the pitch will be giving it everything.

"The team that we play will be strong. I think we have got three or four players that have not played minutes up to now and going into December we need to get them out on the grass, so we will be using them.

"We should be in reasonably good shape, and be strong. There will be changes, but some of those changes are internationals. We will do our job and prepare the team to play a good Newcastle team.''
