Mike Phelan to be appointed new Hull City manager - sources

Hull City are set to name Mike Phelan as permanent manager, sources close to the club have told ESPN FC.

Phelan has been acting as interim manager at the KCOM Stadium since Steve Bruce's shock departure in July, just three weeks before the start of the new Premier League campaign.

The former Manchester United assistant manager has helped steady the ship at Hull despite the difficulties faced by the club on and off the pitch.

Hull are on the verge of a takeover bid, while the club did not make their first signing of the summer until the final two days of the transfer window as Phelan was forced to start the season with just 13 fit senior players.

Phelan guided Hull to two Premier League wins in their first three games with their only defeat coming courtesy of a last-gasp goal against Manchester United.

The 53-year-old worked as No. 2 to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United for five years and this will be his first foray into management in his own right.

Hull's prospective new owners have given the green light for Phelan to continue in the role and he is expected to be confirmed as manager on a deal until the end of the season at least.
