Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin target new stadium move by 2025

Hertha Berlin have outlined plans to move from the Olympiastadion to a privately funded new home by 2025.

The Bundesliga club have studied more than 50 different locations across the German capital and intend to build "a pure football arena" next to their current home in the Olympiapark.

With an average attendance of just under 50,000 this season, Hertha are only utilising 64 percent of their current home, which holds 74,649.

"For the Bundesliga day, which accounts for 95 percent of our game business, the Olympiastadion is no longer suitable and future-oriented," Hertha president Werner Gegenbauer told the club's official website.

"As a club and medium-sized company, we cannot bear the disadvantage of a much too great and ageing Olympiastadion, which does not belong to us."

Hertha Berlin have played at the Olympiastadion since 1963, but with their lease set to run out in 2025 a move is deemed necessary.

"Hertha BSC is firmly convinced that the Berlin Senate recognises the necessity of a new building," Gegenbauer added.

He confirmed any new stadium would be "100 percent privately funded" and said a secondary option near the Brandenburg Park, nine kilometres south of the city, was also on the agenda.

But he stressed: "Our clear favourite is the Olympiapark, with the best and already existing infrastructure."
