Hertha Berlin's John Brooks happy to delay Premier League dreams

Hertha Berlin defender John Brooks has said that he's happy to put his Premier League aspirations on hold because he believes his Bundesliga side have big things in store.

Hertha dropped out of the top three over the weekend after a 1-0 loss to Hoffenheim but the U.S. international is optimistic about facing Borussia Monchengladbach next.

"I've always said that it's a dream of mine to play in England, but I have never said that it must be right now," Brooks told reporters. "Something big is developing here in Berlin, I am under contract until 2019.

"Everything is going into the right direction, I have no pressure and I feel that I am in good hands with [coach] Pal Dardai."

The 23-year-old started in Hertha's last four games after serving as an unused substitute following his return at the beginning of October from a muscle injury.

"Right now, I am super happy here. Things are good on the sporting side, and I am at home here," he said. "But I don't want to lie to anyone and say that I'll be here forever and then leave three months later.

"But it will be a dream one day to take on a new challenge, if Hertha say that everything fits for them and it also fits for me."

Brooks credited Dardai for helping him mature as a player.

"As a Berlin-born it was always a dream of mine to play for Hertha. I've achieved that even though the path was rocky at times," he said.

"There were a few problems, and every young player goes through a few ups and downs. It wasn't easy sometimes, but I survived. Everything's running smoothly now, and I have a coach who trusts me 100 percent in every situation.

"You need that as a young player. I speak up more often than in the past, but that's a part of it.

"I play in the last chain, and you need to take on responsibility there and speak up."

Hertha have made their best ever start to a Bundesliga campaign with five wins, two draws and only two defeats -- to Bayern Munich and third-place Hoffenheim.

"If we can continue to play like that we could be up there where we are right now at the end of the season," Brooks said. "Everyone can see the positive development.

"We are still far away from our limit as a team, we can still improve. Something is growing here, and I am delighted to be part of it."

Weekend rival Gladbach sit 11th in the league table after playing Eintracht Frankfurt to a goalless draw.

"We are still within our goals, even though not everything looked good at Hoffenheim," he said. "We play good and successful football. We were not able to translate it that well at Hoffenheim, but we did a good job in the previous games.

"There's always the odd game where things don't run that smoothly, that was the case at Hoffenheim.

"But I am in good spirits that it'll work out well against Gladbach on Friday again.

"We are a different team to the one last year, we have matured and are more stable. It will be a different match to those last term [which Hertha lost 4-1 and 5-0]."

Regarding the upcoming CONCACAF World Cup qualifier for the United States against Mexico on Nov. 11, Brooks said he trusts coach Jurgen Klinsmann completely.

"Alfredo Morales told me prior to my first match just how big a motivator Jurgen Klinsmann is," he said. "I can confirm that now. He knows exactly what to do to take things forward. You just feel it.

"We are on the up from my point of view. We've got a good team and a good mix of many young and a few experienced players. If you look at our matches you can be satisfied."

He credited his time with the U.S. team thus far for helping him develop and grow.

"A tournament like the Copa America in the summer helps you significantly," he said. "You are up against many different teams, and gather a lot of experience. And you don't play against a striker like Lionel Messi every day."
