Hertha Berlin hand Sami Allagui one-year contract extension

Hertha Berlin have extended the contract of forward Sami Allagui by a year, despite the Tunisian missing the whole of last season due to injury.

The 29-year-old seriously damaged his knee cartilage in a summer friendly match against Rayo Vallecano last year and he has not yet returned since an operation in September 2015.

His previous performances for the club have nevertheless convinced them to offer him a new one-year deal, with his previous contract expiring this summer.

"[Director of sport] Michael Preetz and the club have always stood by me throughout my injury lay-off,'' said Allagui on the Bundesliga club's website.

"Particularly after a year which has not been easy for me, I am highly motivated to pay back the faith shown in me."

Allagui moved to Berlin from Mainz in 2012 and scored six goals as they earned promotion to the Bundesliga before netting a further nine in their first season back in the top flight.

He was loaned back to Mainz last season, but managed just two goals before returning to Berlin in the summer and picking up an injury which has sidelined him for nearly a year.
