Hertha Berlin coach Jos Luhukay sacked after three straight defeats

Hertha Berlin have sacked their coach Jos Luhukay following the club's 1-0 loss at home to Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.

Luhukay joined Hertha BSC in the summer of 2012, and was under contract until 2016.

However, a dramatic decline of three consecutive Bundesliga defeats without a goal and a fall to 17th in the standings led to the club dismissing the Dutch coach.

On Wednesday, the club's sporting director Michael Preetz refused to back the under-pressure coach, and it came as no surprise when the club announced the dismissal of the 51-year-old.

"Hertha BSC explicitly would like to thank Jos Luhukay and his assistants Markus Gellhaus and Rob Reekers for the successful collaboration over the last few years," a statement on the club's official website read.

The club highlighted that Luhukay won promotion with Hertha in his first year, and managed to successfully stay in the league last season.

To secure another year of Bundesliga football in the German capital, Hertha have until further notice appointed former midfielder Pal Dardai, 38 (below centre),who is also in charge of the Hungarian national team.

He will be assisted by Rainer Widmayer, 47, who already worked for the club under the Markus Babbel regime until late 2011.
