Cherundolo planning Hannover return

Hannover defender Steven Cherundolo is hoping to prolong his career after struggling to recover from a knee injury during pre-season.

Steve Cherundolo is a USA international
Steven Cherundolo has made 87 appearances for the United States.

The US international, 34, has only managed five appearances in 2013 and plans to return to action in the next two weeks after undergoing surgery in June.

With one year left on his contract, Cherundolo, who has made 300 Bundesliga appearances for the club since joining in 1999, is keen to recover and prove his worth.

He told Bild: "I want to play as long as it is possible. I still want to achieve a lot with this new team."

Cherundolo won the last of his 87 caps for United States in October 2012, when Jurgen Klinsmann’s side beat Guatemala 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier. With the knee injury ruling him out from squads after that, he has not given up hope of participating in the 2014 World Cup.

"The 2014 World Cup is my big goal. I have seen the Gold-Cup quarter-final [a 5-1 over El Salvador] in the hotel room. Impressive. I am delighted for the lads," he said.

"Jurgen and I were in contact three days ago. He wanted to know how I was feeling and told me that I will be back once I am fit again."
