Hamburg fined €80,000 for protests during game vs. Werder Bremen

Hamburg have increased security at recent games.
Hamburg have had to increase security in response to fans' behaviour.

Hamburg have been fined €80,000 by the German football federation (DFB) because of their fans' behaviour in the derby at Werder Bremen in late February.

Fans set off fireworks in the 86th minute of a 1-0 defeat on Feb. 24 and twice caused the match to be interrupted by throwing them onto the pitch.

The DFB imposed the fine for "grave supporter incidents," which also included throwing beer cups and flag staffs onto Bremen supporters from the upper tiers of the Weserstadion following defender Rick van Drongelen's late own goal.

Heading for their first relegation from the Bundesliga, Hamburg have not won any of their last 15 league games, picked up only two points since the incident and are bottom of the table, seven points behind Mainz in the relegation playoff place.

The incident forced the club to step up security measures at the Volksparkstadion.
