U.S. international Julian Green is set to miss Hamburg's away match at Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday after bruising a rib in Monday's training session, Hamburg have announced.

Green, 19, joined Hamburg on a one-year loan from Bayern Munich on the final day of the transfer window, and made his first appearance in Bundesliga in his new side's 2-0 defeat at Hannover, the final match of the reign of Mirko Slomka. He was substituted after 45 minutes, when it became evident that the Florida-born youngster will need time to adapt to the pace of the Bundesliga.

Last Saturday, against his parent club Bayern, Green featured for the final 15 minutes, and showed "good fundamentals," according to the official Hamburg website.

The USA forward has only made one appearance for Bayern so far, a brief substitute appearance against CSKA Moscow in a Champions League group game last season.

The club said he will stay behind in Hamburg to work on his recovery, they are hopeful Green will return to training this week, but don't know whether he can make the squad this weekend.

Hamburg have picked up two points in four games this season, and have yet to score their first goal of the campaign.

New Hamburg coach Joe Zinnbauer is hopeful that Die Rothosen will open their account at the Borussia Park.

"The great Gerd Muller once said: Only he who shoots can score goals. True words. I hope we can start doing that in Gladbach," he said.
