Injured Feng Xiaoting to report for China World Cup qualifier - Scolari

Guangzhou Evergrande defender Feng Xiaoting will report for duty with China's national squad, despite sustaining an injury that curtailed his involvement in his side's 4-0 AFC Champions League defeat at the hands of Shanghai SIPG on Tuesday evening.

The central defender, a first choice at the heart of the backline for both club and country, was replaced at half-time in the first-leg loss in Shanghai after sustaining a thigh injury late in the opening period.

Despite his removal, however, Evergrande coach Luiz Felipe Scolari insisted the 31-year-old would meet up with the rest of Marcello Lippi's squad ahead of their World Cup qualifying matches against Uzbekistan and Qatar.

"Feng Xiaoting is carrying an injury, but he will still go to the national team's training camp," said the Brazilian, who oversaw Evergrande's biggest defeat in nine years.

"He will have more checkups to decide if he will play with the national team or rest."

China retain a slim hope of qualifying for next year's World Cup finals. To do so, Lippi's team will have to win both of their remaining games to have any chance of progressing to the playoffs.

The Chinese are bottom of their group, and are six points behind Uzbekistan, who occupy third place.

The top two nations qualify automatically for the finals. The teams in third place in both group of the Asian qualifiers face off against one another before advancing to the intercontinental playoffs.

China must win their last two games and hope Uzbekistan also lose to South Korea while Syria and Qatar pick up a minimum of points.
