Liga MX giant Chivas has hired Luis Fernando Tena as new manager hours after firing Tomas Boy, the club announced on Thursday. The move comes just two days out from the Clasico Nacional against Club America. The Guadalajara team, which only fields Mexican players, sits in 15th position in the league and Boy was never a popular choice with the club's fanbase, with the manager leaving the field after Tuesday's 4-2 loss to Pachuca to cries of "Boy out" from the stands. Tena, who previously coached at Cruz Azul and Club America, was spotted in Guadalajara on Thursday morning. The coach known as El Flaco coached Mexico's Under-23 squad to the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London. "The club confides that the experience, fortitude, and knowledge of 'Flaco' in managing players will be a boost from this moment to return the 'Rabano Sagrado' to the historical postition that its tradition and supporters demand," Chivas said in a statement on Thursday. Tena's last managerial position was with Queretaro in 2018. Boy took over last April to see out the 2019 Clausura season on a temporary contract, but was handed a longer deal and prepared for the 2019 Apertura by signing veteran striker Oribe Peralta, who is yet to score for Chivas. "We thank 'Jefe' Boy for his honesty, dedication and passion in shaping a better squad," read a separate statement from Chivas. The Guadalajara club won five games, lost nine and drew once in Boy's stint in charge. The club hasn't made the playoffs in the last four attempts and is 18th in the relegation table -- worked out on points per game over the last three years -- held up only by Veracruz, who hasn't won in 37 Liga MX games. Chivas are due to travel to Mexico City on Friday ahead of Saturday's game against arch-rival Club America. Las Aguilas are without a win in six Liga MX games.
