Greek federation upholds league suspension

ATHENS, Greece -- The Greek football association has upheld its decision to suspend the country's league matches after failing to reach an agreement with clubs on measures to protect referees from potential attacks.

A statement on Thursday from the governing body says matches in the first, second and amateur third division remain suspended indefinitely following the street assault last week on senior refereeing official Christoforos Zagrafos.

Top Greek club representatives held talks on Wednesday but the meeting ended in mutual recriminations and thinly-veiled accusations of corruption.

The chairman of the top league, Dimitris Agrafiotis, said he would formally resign from his position on Monday.

Games suspended this weekend include league leader PAOK against Asteras, Xanthi hosting Olympiakos, and Panathinaikos against Ergotelis.
