Santos: No excuses for defeat

Greece coach Fernando Santos says his side were beaten by the better team following the 3-0 loss to Colombia on Saturday.

The South American nation were good value for their Group C win in Belo Horizonte, with Pablo Armero, Teofilo Gutierrez and James Rodriguez all getting on the scoresheet.

The defeat leaves Greece facing an uphill battle with matches against Ivory Coast and Japan still to come, but Santos is hopeful his side can raise their game.

"You can't make excuses when you lose 3-0. We had good spells of play and all we can do now is look at the next matches," he said.

"Colombia were the better team. They caused us problems right from the start and we weren't focused enough and didn't react. At the end of the day, the margin of defeat is still too high though.''

Panagiotis Kone and Vassilis Torosidis went close to finding an equaliser for Greece, while Theofanis Gekas also spurned a golden chance.

Kone feels his side can draw some positives out of their display, but concedes they must be more ruthless in front of goal next time out.

"The score doesn't show it, but I think we played well," he said. "But these games are turned on the details, and they didn't work for us today. We're still proud to be here, and we'll continue to play hard."

Greece goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis added: "We should have done better in the finishing, I don't think we were worth a 3-0 defeat. But unfortunately that's football.

"There are three games, we only lost one. It's a big success to be here, but we have to win too."
