Court of Arbitration for Sport hears Gibraltar's appeal to join FIFA

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Gibraltar's appeal to become a FIFA member has been heard at world sport's highest court, with no timetable set for a ruling.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport says the two sides will now submit further legal arguments after a hearing ended late on Thursday.

The case is unlikely to be resolved before the FIFA congress next week in Zurich.

FIFA declined to comment on Friday.

Though Gibraltar are UEFA members, they are barred from entering FIFA's 2018 World Cup qualifying program.

Gibraltar would need an urgent CAS verdict in their favor before trying to get a membership request added to the FIFA agenda.

FIFA's executive committee rejected Gibraltar's application last September because the governing body's statutes require the British territory to be an independent country.
