Accra Hearts of Oak's season is in ruins after they were defeated 3-1 by Ghana Premier League new boys Karela FC, with William Opoku Mensah netting a hat-trick, however the midweek action elsewhere was marred by crowd trouble.

The game between Elmina Sharks and Medeama was called off after referee Nuhu Liman was hit by a stone from the crowd as he made his way to the dressing room at half time at the Ndoum Sports Complex.

He was transported to hospital but when fourth referee Daniel Dorgbetor emerged with his assistants after a 50-minute delay, Medeama refused to continue.

The violence overshadowed a brilliant display by Karela FC who inflicted Hearts of Oak's second straight loss, their fourth in the seven-game-old season, and left the Phobians well off the pace early on.

Hearts, without coach Henry Wellington due to health problems, started well, taking an early lead through Daniel Kordie.

However, the home side hit back in the second half with an 18-minute hat-trick from substitute Mensah. Defeat leaves Hearts of Oak on ten points, and their struggles should intensify calls for a new technical direction at the club.

Those three points take Karela joint top of the Ghana Premier League, tied with Ashanti Gold.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko have fared slightly better, but are only one point above their bitter rivals after Frederick Boateng's second-half goal cancelled out Latif Salifu's opener for Berekum Chelsea. WAFA ended a four-game losing streak but could only take a point at home to leaders Ashanti Gold.

Umar Basiru gave the Sogakope side the lead from the penalty spot, but Richard Djodi scored the equalizer for AshGold to keep them atop the league on goal difference.

In Tema, Inter Allies sustained their brilliant home form, beating Eleven Wonders 1-0 via Abdul Nassiru Hamzah's second-half goal.

Fourth-placed Allies are unbeaten at home in four games, having scored seven goals and conceded none. Wa All Stars, champions from two seasons ago, are bottom of the league after a fifth loss of the season at Bechem United.

In continental competition, Ghana will have representation in the group stage of the CAF Confederations Cup after reigning GPL champions Aduana Stars reached the last 16 despite a 2-1 loss away in Madagascar.

The Ghana champions are through 7-3 on aggregate at the expense of Fosa Juniors, but endured a first-half scare as the hosts attempted to battle back from a 5-1 first-leg loss.

Aduana were down by goal inside only five minutes and conceded a second in the opening stages of the second half before weathering the storm.

Nathaniel Asamoah struck to effectively seal the tie.

Aduana's progress into the group stages of the Confederation Cup marks a first Ghanaian return to that stage since Medeama's run in 2016.
