Kwesi Appiah wraps up US trip at Columbus Crew

Coach Kwesi Appiah will wrap up what he calls a "very successful" tour of Major League Soccer clubs this weekend by visiting the largest Ghanaian contingent at Columbus Crew.

Appiah stayed on in the United States after the Black Stars' two-game tour to familiar himself with a league that is increasingly becoming popular with Ghanaian players.

He has visited the trio of Lloyd Sam, Kofi Opare and Patrick Nyarko at DC United, as well as three players with connections to Ghana at Philadelphia Union.

The trip has also included a chat with Gideon Baah, the former Kumasi Asante Kotoko defender who is trying to work his way back to fitness at New York Red Bull after almost a year out with injury.

"It's been good so far," Appiah tells KweséESPN. "The chance to meet players who have represented Ghana and those eligible to play for the country, and also to get first-hand knowledge about the way things work in what is a growing football environment is always a good one.

"Naturally this means that there will be a bigger perspective for future squads, how we prepare for games, and many other things."

However, Appiah's biggest visit will come this week. He is due at Columbus Crew, who currently employ three Ghana internationals in Jonathan Mensah, Harrison Afful and Mohammed Abu, as well as the uncapped defender Lalas Abubakari.
