Avram Grant on the verge of being appointed new Ghana coach

Former Chelsea boss Avram Grant is set to become the new coach of Ghana, subject to agreeing terms with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Grant, who guided the Blues to the Champions League final in 2008, will officially take on the role if a financial agreement has been reached with the GFA.

The 59-year-old -- currently technical director of Thai side BEC Tero Sasana -- would succeed Kwasi Appiah, who walked away from the job after failing to guide the Black Stars out of the group stage at the World Cup in Brazil.

GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi confirmed that Grant is the governing body's first choice, while the job will be offered to former Real Valladolid boss Juan Ignacio Jimenez should negotiations with the Israeli break down.

"The executive considered a report of the committee that was put up by the three member committee to appoint the new coach for Ghana," Nyantakyi is quoted as saying by Allsports.

"Our preference is Avram Grant and Jimenez is our second choice. We have not reached agreement with him yet but it is left with some small details which will be sorted out soon."

Should Grant, who has also taken charge of West Ham and Portsmouth, accept the role, he will be expected to guide Ghana to January's African Nations Cup and do well in the competition.

The Black Stars currently sit top of their qualifying group, with games against Uganda and Togo taking place later this month.

On Friday, they face Nigeria in an international friendly, and the GFA has announced the Black Stars' starting lineup for the clash.

The game will mark the official opening of the new Akwa Ibom Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria, and is to be attended by Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, while legends of the game such as Pele have been invited to attend.

Richard Ofori has been selected in goal ahead of Stromsgodset keeper Adam Kwarasey, who featured in the summer's World Cup, while Kennedy Ashia of Liberty Professionals is set to lead the attack.

There is no place in the squad for the likes of regulars Asamoah Gyan, Kwadwo Asamoah and Andre Ayew.

Ghana starting lineup: Richard Ofori, Emmanuel Nti Mensah, Abdul Ganiyu Ishmeal, Benjamin Agyare, Lawrence Lartey, Richard Yamoah, Kennedy Ashia, Kojo Opoku, Isaac Osae, Samuel Afful, Amadu Latif.

Substitutes: David Opoku, Elvis Opoku, Abdul Ganiyu, Noah Martey, Eric Antwi Ofori, Enoch Ofori Kumi, Vincent Atinga.
