Germany 'arrogant' in World Cup qualifier vs. Azerbaijan - Hummels

Germany defender Mats Hummels has said his side were guilty of an "arrogant" performance in their 4-1 World Cup qualifying win over Azerbaijan on Sunday.

The defending World Cup champions made it five wins from five matches in Group C of UEFA qualifying thanks to goals from Thomas Muller, Mario Gomez and an Andre Schurrle brace, but their opponents gave Germany a scare by registering the first goal Hummels & Co. have conceded thus far in qualifying.

The Bayern Munich centre-back warned that Joachim Low's side will need to shake off Sunday's complacency, while also adding that the Germans' low-key approach made their hosts look stronger than they were.

"We made Azerbaijan look two classes better than they are," he told RTL. "We were a little bit arrogant -- I don't think that's good.

"That made the game much more difficult than it needed to be."

In addition to his pair of goals, Schurrle also registered an assist in his first start for his country since 2015. The Borussia Dortmund attacker echoed Hummels' claims of complacency, saying that Azerbaijan's competitiveness was higher than Germany's

"It was hard work," Schurrle said. "We were too weak in the duels and we lost the ball a lot. But in the crucial moments we made it count.

"My performance is a lot about the confidence that Jogi Low gives me. I can go back to Dortmund with a good feeling."

With Germany's last match coming on Nov. 11 against San Marino, Low was pleased with his side's performance. Although he agreed that there were elements of his team's game that could be improved upon.

"I'm only satisfied with results," he said. "We have fulfilled our duty, but that was not the manner we wanted to show. It wasn't up to our standards.

"You could tell that we haven't played together for four months. Some of the automatic things are missing. It wasn't all gold."
