Germany confirms bid to host 2024 European Championship

The German FA (DFB) has announced that it will bid to host the 2024 European Championship.

The governing body hopes to bring the tournament to a united Germany for the first time ever.

On Friday, it voted to enter the bidding process for 2024, with UEFA having said associations should officially declare an interest by March 3.

The German bid will include using 10 different stadiums for the 24-team event.

DFB president Reinhard Grindel told the organisation's official website: "The European Championship is a lighthouse project for German football.

"We will make a first-class bid and be vigilant about a transparent process to determine the 10 stadiums."

Grindel said Germany had the stadiums, the infrastructure and the knowledge to host an "economical as well as an ecologically sustainable" tournament.

The bidding process will be accompanied by Transparency International by special request of the DFB after the scandal that erupted over the 2006 World Cup.

Germany last hosted a European Championship in 1988, before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The successful bidder for hosting the 2024 European Championship will be announced in September 2018.
