Germany's Thomas Muller 'never doubted' his ability during goalless run

Thomas Muller was pleased to see his name back on the scoresheet for Germany following the 3-0 2018 World Cup qualifying win in Norway, but Mats Hummels insists the Nationalmannschaft are still lacking in goal scorers.

Muller had not scored a competitive goal for the world champions since October 2015 and failed to find the back of the net in six games at Euro 2016 but said he "never doubted" himself.

"You can prepare yourself, you can just hang on, and sometimes you have the luck and make the right decision, the pass has to be right," Muller told reporters after the match. "But I never doubted my overall quality to score goals.

"We played well in our first match however we could have scored more goals. We were a little bit lucky with the first goal. However, it's still nice to get on the scoresheet," Muller added, referring to his first goal of the night when scored one of his trademark goal, beating Norway keeper Rune Jarstein, who deflected the ball, from short-distance.

Muller later added a second with a strong header following Sami Khedira's cross from the right and took his Germany tally to 34 goals in 79 games.

Mario Gotze spearheaded Germany's attack as a false nine in place of the injured Mario Gomez, but again failed to impress in a role that is not his natural position.

Speaking to Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung before Sunday's match, Hummels echoed Muller's view that although Germany have several players who can create goals they lacked those who are able to score them.

"We have a lot of players who like to set up goals," he said. "And I think we could use more players who want to score goals, which is a bit unusual. Because you'd normally have a few who are eager to score."

The Bayern Munich centre-back said he has high hopes his former BVB teammate Marco Reus will add a new dimension to the team once he returns from injury.

"I especially think of Marco Reus," he added. "He's really hungry to shoot at goal, and makes a lot of runs. He's a perfect fit for the rest of team, we just need players like him to have the right mix."
