Manuel Neuer pulls out of Germany squad with stomach illness

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has withdrawn from the Germany squad because of a stomach illness, the national federation said on Monday.

Neuer played in Germany's 3-2 defeat to England on Saturday but will not feature on Tuesday against Italy.

"The World Goalkeeper of the Year is suffering from a stomach illness, and the coaches, after discussion with the team doctors, decided it would be best for him to continue his recovery at home," the DFB said in a statement.

The federation did not say who will replace Neuer, who turned 30 on Sunday. But coach Joachim Low has three more goalkeepers in the squad -- Bernd Leno and Kevin Trapp, plus Marc-Andre ter Stegen of Barcelona.

Midfielder Sami Khedira is also a doubt for Italy game after missing practice on Monday. The federation said he was "completing an individual recovery session at the team hotel."

However, Khedira spoke at a news conference ahead of the game and said he was looking forward to the "honour" of captaining Germany in the absence of Bastian Schweinsteiger.

"It's something special," he said, adding he was not the only one to take on more responsibility in Schweinsteiger's absence. "We've got Manu [Neuer], Jerome [Boateng], Mats [Hummels], Toni [Kroos] or Thomas [Muller], many players whose voices carry weight."

Khedira also said it would be wrong to rule out Bastian Schweinsteiger following his latest injury setback.

The Manchester United midfielder could miss the rest of the season after injuring his knee while on international duty, but Khedira is convinced the 31-year-old will come back stronger than ever and silence his critics.

"You almost get the feeling that he's left us for good and won't play football again, but anybody who writes him off is making a big mistake," Khedira said.
