Germany players will help Mario Gotze recover - Mats Hummels

Mats Hummels has said the Germany players will ensure Mario Gotze gets the support he needs after his recent struggles at Bayern Munich.

Gotze, 23, is currently down the pecking order at Bayern, with Pep Guardiola saying at the weekend that his side's success was evidence that he had made the "right call" in omitting the midfielder.

The former Borussia Dortmund star, who has been linked with a summer exit, has played just 54 minutes since recovering from a groin injury in mid-February, and a recent Bild headline read: "Humiliated by Pep, forgotten by the bosses."

Gotze is now with Germany for the international break and Dortmund defender Hummels hopes his former clubmate can regain his confidence in the coming days.

"We will nurse him at the national team," Hummels told reporters ahead of the upcoming friendlies with England and Netherlands. "His role for Germany is currently just bigger and more important than the one for Bayern."

He added: "He's an experienced footballer. It's a shame he does not get the chance to show it currently."

Gotze, who joined Bayern from Dortmund in 2013, looked to be back to his best earlier this season when he made 10 appearances and scored four goals, but he sustained a groin injury on international duty in October.

"Mario actually played a really good season until he sustained the injury," Hummels said. "That's just bad luck."

Hummels said he is "just too far away from it" to explain Gotze's lack of opportunities under Guardiola, adding that his primary interest in Bayern is results given that Dortmund need to overhaul a five-point gap at the top of the Bundesliga.

"I only look at Bayern's lineup because I hope they might drop points," he said.

Gotze, who scored the winning goal for Germany in the 2014 World Cup final, is under contract at Bayern until 2017.
