Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mario Gotze in Germany squad for friendlies

Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah is the only debutant in Joachim Low's 27-man Germany squad for the upcoming friendlies against England and Italy.

The team also features captain Bastian Schweinsteiger, Bayern outcast Mario Gotze and Turkish Super Lig players Lukas Podolski and Mario Gomez.

Notable absentees are Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan and Bayern's Jerome Boateng, who both are recovering from recent injuries, as well as versatile BVB defender Erik Durm and Schalke youngster Leroy Sane.

Also missing is the midfield duo of Dortmund's Julian Weigl and Bayern's Joshua Kimmich, who both had been tipped to be included in the squad.

Schweinsteiger and Gotze, two 2014 World Cup heroes for Germany, have been struggling to win minutes for Manchester United and Bayern Munich respectively after returning from injuries, but received the public backing of manager Joachim Low.

"They have made progress with their clubs following their injuries. As the captain, Bastian was determined to come along," Low told the official DFB website.

"That attitude sets a good example. He is an absolute leader. The match against England is obviously very special for him after his move to Manchester United, as is the following match in Munich."

Despite calling up a 27-man squad, including four keepers -- Manuel Neuer, Bernd Leno, Marc ter Stegen and Kevin Trapp -- Low added that this "doesn't mean that those who aren't here have been written off. On the contrary, we are also looking at a few of the younger players."

Of debutant Tah, Low said: "With Jerome Boateng and Benedikt Howedes injured, we wanted to try different options in defence. We have watched Jonathan Tah quite a lot recently and we're eager to see how he gets on in the squad."

Germany face England in Berlin on March 26, and take on Italy in Munich on March 29.

"It will be a welcome chance for us to start the European Championship positively and get in the mood for the tournament," Low said. "For me, England and Italy are, along with Spain, Belgium, France and us, among the favourites for the tournament. Ultimately, we expect to gain a lot of valuable knowledge, which is always more important than the result."

The Germany coach especially praised England and current manager Roy Hodgson.

He said: "England have undergone a lot of change and are playing dynamic and successful football with lots of young players under Roy Hodgson. They are very consistent and clinical."
