Germany should offer Mario Gomez return vs. France, Netherlands - Daum

Mario Gomez should be offered a return to the Germany national team for their upcoming friendlies with France and Netherlands, according to Christoph Daum.

Former Bayer Leverkusen, Besiktas and Fenerbahce coach Daum, who was also on the brink of becoming Germany coach in 2000, believes the current Besiktas forward has the attributes Germany need to be more variable in their attack.

Gomez's last appearance in a Germany shirt came in a 4-2 friendly defeat to Argentina in September 2014, but his recent return to form in Turkey, where he has netted six goals in seven games, means he warrants consideration according to Daum.

"We've not got a player like [Robert] Lewandowski in Germany and that is why we are playing with a false nine, an alternative that I don't like," Daum told Sky Sport Deutschland.

"Mario Gomez is getting back to his old form at Besiktas and he's winning back his poacher, goal scorer's mentality, which would do Germany a lot of good especially against defensive opponents."

The 30-year-old former Stuttgart and Bayern Munich forward has netted 25 goals for his country, but lost his place prior to last year's World Cup as he struggled to get a regular game for Fiorentina due to injury.

He was loaned out to Besiktas for the season, but could still return to Florence in June.
