Mario Gomez belongs in Germany squad, says Christoph Daum

Former Bayer Leverkusen coach Christoph Daum believes Mario Gomez should be called back into the Germany fold for Euro 2016.

Gomez fell out of favour following his move to Fiorentina last season, with a series of injuries seeing him lose consistency in his game.

He has rediscovered his fitness and form following a move to Besiktas this summer, however, and Daum believes he is the man Germany need to be successful in France next year.

"We've not got a player like [Robert] Lewandowski in Germany and that is why we are playing with a false nine, an alternative that I don't like,'' Daum told Sky Sport Deutschland.

"Mario Gomez is getting back to his old form at Besiktas and he's winning back his poacher, goalscorer's mentality, which would do Germany a lot of good, especially against defensive opponents."

Gomez, 30, has scored six goals in seven Turkish Super Lig matches this season.

His last appearance in a Germany shirt came in a 4-2 friendly defeat to Argentina 13 months ago, which came over a year after his previous cap.

The former Stuttgart and Bayern Munich forward has scored 25 goals for his country.
