Bastian Schweinsteiger: Germany want another summer like Brazil 2014

Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger urged fans to "give us wind in our sails" after Joachim Low's side clinched qualification for the 2016 European Championship on Sunday.

The World Cup-winners, who endured an at times bumpy qualifying campaign, made sure of their place with a 2-1 win over Georgia in Leipzig.

Both Low and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer warned that they would have to improve their performances in order to have a chance of adding the European trophy to their World Cup win.

Manchester United's Schweinsteiger also admitted that the qualifying campaign had suffered an uncertain start in the aftermath of last summer's World Cup glory in Brazil.

In his message on the official German FA (DFB) website, he wrote: "I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you on behalf of the whole team to all of our incredible fans.

"In the first few games after the World Cup in Brazil, the results were not what we wanted. However we could always feel the trust you had in us, and there was never any doubt in my mind that we would justify this trust.

"We found our feet as a team, and today we can look back and say we had a successful qualifying campaign."

He said he was sure Euro 2016 hosts France would "put on a huge football festival" and added: "The stage is set. France have fantastic stadia, France have fantastic fans, France have fantastic footballers, and the French are a Grande Nation in football.

"As world champions, we can set ourselves the highest targets. Our ambition is to be in that final. I can also say we want the next title.

"I'm sure we can achieve a lot along with you, the fans. Support us! Give us wind in our sails! You carried us to the tournament, now we want to go to France and experience another summer like the one in Brazil with you."
