Emre Can could receive first Germany call-up next season - Joachim Low

Germany coach Joachim Low has opened the door to a first international call-up for Liverpool's Emre Can.

Low announced that he would make adjustments to his squad following Germany's 2014 World Cup triumph and the decisions made by Philipp Lahm, Per Mertesacker and Miroslav Klose to retire from international football.

Currently, however, the average age of the Germany squad is higher than that from last summer's tournament in Brazil, while no debutants have been called up for the upcoming games against Australia and Georgia. The only changes see Ilkay Gundogan, Holger Badstuber and Bastian Schweinsteiger return following injuries.

Speaking to a news conference in Frankfurt on Tuesday, Low explained that he does have plans to welcome a host of new players to his squad, but not until next season.

"We have made changes through those who have come back from injuries and there will maybe be more changes in the upcoming season. But right now, I don't see the necessity to bring in new players," Low said.

With the European Under-21 Championship taking place in the summer and Germany hoping to make the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro -- the top three from the under-21 competition qualify -- Low wants younger players such as Can, 21, to gain tournament experience before making the step up to the senior team.

"Emre Can, [Hoffenheim attacker] Kevin Volland, [Schalke midfielders] Max Meyer and Leon Goretzka -- they shall play the tournament in June," Low said, citing the generation of Sami Khedira, Manuel Neuer, Mesut Ozil and Mats Hummels as role models after their 2009 European Under-21 Championship win.

"I prefer them to play a tournament at the highest level and we'll give the cards a shuffle after that. Those with good performances at the European Under-21 Championship will definitely get an invitation."
