John Anthony Brooks' future undecided

Hertha Berlin defender John Anthony Brooks has not been named in the Germany Under-21 team for their friendly against France in Freiburg next week.

John Anthony Brooks had an impressive 2012-13 campaign
John Anthony Brooks helped Hertha Berlin to promotion in 2012-13.

Brooks, 20, has already made four appearances for the US Under-20 and one for the Germany Under-20 team.

New Germany Under-21 coach Horst Hrubesch had hoped to persuade Brooks, the son of a US serviceman, to opt for the Nationalmannschaft. However, earlier on Wednesday, Brooks had hinted that he might opt for Klinsmann’s team.

"I can’t say right now," he said when questioned about a possible Germany Under-21 debut. Brooks could now join the Gold Cup winners in their friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina on August 14, after being invited by Jurgen Klinsmann.

"He must find out where he feels most comfortable and where the prospects for the senior team is the best," Jos Luhukay, his coach at Hertha, said. "The USA are the quicker route, he has already been invited. If he opts for Germany, he has to take the Under-21 path."

Brooks can still change allegiance until his 21st birthday on January 28, 2014, or up until he makes an official debut in a competitive match for the United States or Joachim Low's Germany national team.

The defender was a key figure in Hertha’s campaign that ended with promotion to the Bundesliga for the Berlin-based “Old Dame” in 2012-13.
