Bayern breeze past Hannover

Holders Bayern Munich beat Hannover for the second time in 11 days to secure a place in the last 16 of the DFB Pokal.

• DFB Pokal: Dortmund leave it late

After winning 2-0 in the Bundesliga, the Bavarians saw off Mirko Slomka's side by a 4-1 scoreline at the Allianz Arena.

Thomas Muller, who scored a hat-trick in the opening round, grabbed a brace, with the Bundesliga's all-time top foreign goalscorer Claudio Pizarro also on target.

Franck Ribery completed the rout to take Bayern through while Didier Ya Konan scored what proved to be Hannover's consolation.

Hertha Berlin became the latest top-flight side to be dumped out of the competition after being beaten 3-1 by Kaiserslautern after naming a second-string side.

Despite taking the lead through Peter Niemeyer, Jos Luhukay's men capitulated in front of nearly 25,000 fans at the Fritz-Walter Stadion with Mohamadou Idrissou, Karim Matmour and Olivier Occean securing the Red Devils’ win.

Eintracht Frankfurt had no such problems with Takashi Inui and Stefan Aigner on target in a 2-0 win over Bochum, but they will not be joined in the draw for the third round by city rivals FSV Frankfurt, who went down 2-0 at home to Ingolstadt.

Third division Saarbrucken upset Paderborn 2-1 while Union Berlin won 1-0 in Osnabruck.

Benedikt Howedes headed Schalke into the next round with Jefferson Farfan and Max Meyer also on target in a 3-1 win at Darmstadt.

In the night's other all-Bundesliga affair, Freiburg gained revenge for their semi-final defeat to Stuttgart last season by winning 2-1 against the Swabians, thanks to goals from Matthias Ginter and Mike Hanke. Vedad Ibisevic hit Stuttgart's consolation.
