German VAR official Wolfgang Stark relieved of duties after Schalke controversy

The FC crew answer your tweets on the worst pitch they've played on, if Bayern would have had more UCL titles with VAR, Josef Martinez and more.

Wolfgang Stark has been removed as a Bundesliga Video Assistant Referee (VAR) official "for the time being" after controversy marred Wolfsburg's 2-1 win over Schalke at the weekend.

Match referee Patrick Ittrich sent off Schalke defender Matija Nastasic after Stark's intervention and, minutes later, Wolfsburg attacker Wout Weghorst's red card was changed to a yellow after being reviewed.

Schalke lodged an appeal against the two-match ban that followed Nastasic's dismissal.

"It's like in a football team. If a player goes through a bad phase, he will still be training. He can promote himself through performances," Jochen Drees, who will become the head of VAR at the German FA (DFB), told Bild.

"And if that's OK one day, he will return to the starting formation."

Stark, who refereed at the 2010 World Cup, has been a VAR official on a record 43 occasions since the technology was introduced in the Bundesliga last summer.

On Thursday, German football magazine kicker reported that the DFB could now face a staff shortage with Drees also no longer available to officiate once he takes over as head of VAR on Oct. 1.
