Aubameyang beats Lewandowski to Bundesliga top scorer accolade

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's two goals on the final day of the Bundesliga season saw him beat Robert Lewandowski to finish as the division's top scorer, an accolade known as the Torjagerkanone.

Lewandowski, who played the full game but failed to score as Bayern Munich ran out 4-1 winners against Freiburg, ended the season on 30 goals.

While Aubameyang, whose brace in Borussia Dortmund's 4-3 victory against Werder Bremen ensured a third-place finish, managed 31 over the campaign.

Dortmund's victory means they qualify for the group stages of next season's Champions League.

"The Torjagerkanone means a lot to me," Aubameyang, who started the day a goal behind Lewandowski, said. "It was a great effort -- made by the whole team.

Lewandowski's 30 goals included three hat tricks and eight doubles as Bayern won the Bundesliga for a fifth consecutive season, finishing 15 points ahead of second-placed RB Leipzig.

Although Dortmund were not as successful overall, Aubameyang proved more deadly in front of goal. The Gabon international scored four goals in the 5-2 win over Hamburg in November but did not notch a hat trick and only produced six doubles.

That means 25 of Lewandowski's goals came in 11 games, and he only scored in 16 of the 33 games he played in the Bundesliga compared with Aubameyang who scored in 22 of his 32 appearances.
