Mainz level late against Dortmund; Freiburg pile on Hertha Berlin woe

Danny Latza headed a late equaliser as Mainz clinched a 1-1 home draw against Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

Marco Reus struck an early goal for Dortmund, who would have climbed up to third in the table with victory, but Mainz midfielder Latza's 83rd-minute header denied the visitors back-to-back league wins.

Reus, recently linked with a move to Premier League title-chasers Arsenal, fired Dortmund ahead in the third minute when he got on the end of a swift counter-attack to convert Andre Schurrle's assist.

Schurrle went close to extending Dortmund's lead in the second half but his goal-bound shot was saved in the bottom corner by Mainz goalkeeper Jonas Lossl.

Latza headed home Levin Oztunali's cross to secure the hosts a second-successive league draw, while the home side went close to snatching victory in stoppage time when substitute Pablo De Blasis fired narrowly wide.

Elsewhere, Hertha Berlin slipped to their fourth defeat in five league games as they lost 2-1 at Freiburg.

Striker Janik Haberer fired Freiburg into a 39th-minute lead with a low shot into the bottom corner and Nils Petersen drilled in the home side's second from outside the penalty area with three minutes remaining.

Hertha substitute Julian Schieber, who had gone close to equalising for the visitors just before Petersen struck, lashed home in the 88th minute for the visitors, but it proved only a consolation as Freiburg held on for maximum points as they bounced back from last week's home defeat to Bayern Munich.

Freiburg climbed up one place to eighth in the table and to within four points of Hertha, who remain sixth.
