Leipzig serious contenders to win Bundesliga - BVB's Thomas Tuchel

Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel says new Bundesliga leaders Leipzig are serious title contenders and can become Germany's Leicester City.

Leicester surprised everyone last season by running away with the Premier League title, and Tuchel feels the Bundesliga newcomers are capable of a similar shock in Germany.

Speaking at the news conference following Dortmund's 1-0 win over Bayern Munich Tuchel said: "Last year we had the phenomenon of Leicester City in England.

"Leipzig can do exactly the same thing. I'm convinced of that whenever I see them play."

Bayern's first defeat of the season in Dortmund, coupled with Leipzig's 3-2 comeback victory in Leverkusen on Friday, means the Red Bull-backed side are the first East German league leaders since Hansa Rostock in 1991.

"Leipzig are no flash in the pan," Tuchel added. "They have to be taken very seriously indeed. It's comparable with what happened last season in England."

However, Tuchel did express some doubts whether Leipzig "could stay at the top in the years to come."

The newly promoted side, only formed in 2009, lead the Bavarians by three points after 11 games.

As for Saturday's game, Tuchel said he could not be happier to get out of the ring after a fight with Bayern.

Using a boxing euphemism, Tuchel admitted the best his side could have hoped for was not to be knocked out by the record German champions, and they got even more than they bargained for thanks to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's 11th-minute winner.

"When you step into the ring with Bayern then you cannot really expect to come out without a black eye, without conceding a goal," said the Dortmund coach on his club's website. "You've just got to do all you can to stay on your feet and that was our motto.

"No matter what happened, no matter how much we have to suffer, we would never give up and we would keep supporting each other, remaining courageous and continuing to defend. We had a goal to defend in the end and we did that."

The goal was worth three points and resulted in Bayern's first defeat of the season, with the gap between the two sides also down to just three points.

Although Tuchel admitted his team had wobbled a bit in the end, they never risked taking any knockout blows.

"We conceded a few half chances near the end, but there were few big chances in there," he said. "That is why this was such a great performance from us.

"It was a difficult game and we suffered a lot at times, but we knew it was going to be like this."
