Julian Nagelsmann: Hoffenheim lucky to escape with point at Bayern Munich

Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann admitted his side had been fortunate to come away from Bayern Munich with a point in their Bundesliga clash.

The 29-year-old's side conserved their unbeaten start to the league season with a 1-1 draw on Saturday, although the German champions had chances to take all three points in a second half in which they struck the woodwork twice.

"We're happy to take this point back with us, although in view of the second half, Bayern would have deserved to win,'' Nagelsmann said on Hoffenheim's official website. "They put us under extreme pressure and we could hardly free ourselves from it. We're delighted with this point.''

Kerem Demirbay gave a confident Hoffenheim the lead in the 16th minute, but a Steven Zuber own goal brought the hosts level before half-time.

Demirbay felt he and his teammates had shown good character, although he did not feel they had played one of their best games this season.

"We can be happy to have taken a point,'' he said. "The way we played with the ball wasn't very good, but we had the right mentality and showed that we can hold our own against opponents like Bayern.

"They put a lot of pressure on us and that's why we fell a few steps short up front and we were unable to play our counterattacks well.''

Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti was philosophical after the draw, which moved his side three points clear at the top of the table.

"We would have deserved to win, given the chances we created,'' Ancelotti said. "But this is football -- sometimes you just lack the luck you need.''

Mats Hummels hit one of Bayern's two shots against the woodwork and he said one of those "should have gone in and decided the game."

They did not, however, and Bayern could be joined at the top of the table by RB Leipzig if they beat Mainz on Sunday.
