Timothy Chandler aims to earn spot on U.S. team for 2018 World Cup

Timothy Chandler relishes the idea of returning to the U.S. national team full-time and competing for his place on the 2018 World Cup squad.

Last Friday, Chandler, 26, returned to the U.S. team for the first time since the 2015 Gold Cup.

The Eintracht Frankfurt defender was named to the preliminary squad for the 2016 Copa America but missed the trip due to an injury. He returned for the first time as a substitute in the 2-0 win at Cuba.

The German-born U.S. full-back has been one of the surprises for his club Eintracht Frankfurt this season, and has featured in all six league games so far.

Speaking to reporters following his early return to Germany, Chandler said he was delighted to have also returned to the U.S. team.

"It's a nice feeling to be back with the national team. To be part of such a match in Cuba is indeed pretty great," he told reporters.

Jurgen Klinsmann's men face a crucial World Cup Qualifying match next month against Mexico, and Chandler is already looking to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

"I will give it my all to be part of the squad there," he said.

On Saturday, Chandler and his Frankfurt teammates host league leaders Bayern Munich and they hope to remain without a defeat at their Waldstadion.

Chandler said: "It's a special match with a great atmosphere. We want to put up some resistance and try to take points."
